I believe it is crucial to highlight an often-overlooked aspect of mental well-being: nutrition. My research has shown me that there’s a connection between food and our mood in Nigeria. This shows that what we eat significantly impacts our mental health. Certain Nigerian foods can be potent mood enhancers, playing a vital role in supporting our mental well-being. They are;
1. Omega-3 Rich Foods:
Omega-3 fatty acids are known for their mood-boosting properties. Fish such as mackerel (Titus), sardines, and salmon, commonly found in our local markets, are excellent sources of omega-3s. Incorporating these fish into our diet can support brain health and improve mood.
2. Whole Grains:
Whole grains like oats, brown rice, and whole wheat bread help in the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that contributes to feelings of well-being and happiness. Opting for whole grain versions of our staple foods can provide a steady release of energy, keeping our mood balanced throughout the day.
