Growing up in Nigeria, mental health was often seen as a taboo topic. No one wanted to be seen as a mad person or having mental issues, and this created lots of misunderstanding and stigma around the term “mental health”.

Today, I can say authoritatively that this impression about mental health has progressively reduced. Many people, including myself, were unaware of the importance of mental health and the impact it has on our overall well-being but recently there’s been increase in sensitization on the importance of prioritizing your mental health to live better and function much more effectively.

In this article, I will share the importance of mental health awareness and how we can break the stigma in our communities.

Common Mental Health Issues & the impact of stigma

Mental health issues can range from common conditions such as anxiety and depression to more severe disorders like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. These conditions affect people of all ages and backgrounds and are not a sign of weakness or a character flaw.
